Sergeant Steve Ayres (29) originates from Darlington. He joined
the Army Apprentice College in September 1989 and following basic training was posted to
Communications & Security Group UK (Loughborough) for further trade training.
Since then he has served in Germany, Northern Ireland and Bosnia. He's currently
serving with 225 Signal Squadron, 15 Signal Regiment.
His previous mountaineering experience is limited to walking in the both the Lake District
& Scotland and rock climbing on the sea cliffs of Pembrokeshire, Wales. He has
though attended the two expedition training meets in the French Alps in February 2000
& 01. With no previous expedition experience he one of the 'novice' team members
of BAAE. His sailing experience totals 5 weeks, in and around the Baltic
"I'm really looking forward to
experiencing the isolation and beauty of the Antarctic while knowing I have accomplished
something that others can only dream of. I am though dreading the sailing from the
Falklands across the Drake Passage which I'm sure is going to be very cold &
include Mountain Leader Training, Rock Climbing Proficiency, Competent Crew &
Basic Ski Proficiency.
He's a member of the Army Sailing Association, Army Mountaineering Association &
Mountain leader Training Board.
